This year’s Grammy Awards included a separate game category for the first time. Five games were nominated for “Best Musical Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media”, and it was Assassin’s Creed Valhalla that walked away with the award.

More specifically, it was the Dawn of Ragnarok expansion soundtrack that won. The music was composed by Stephanie Economou, who was on hand to receive the award.

– Finally, I just want to say thank you to all those who fought to create this category for game music. Thank you for focusing on and validating how important game music can be. This is truly a great honor, Economou said in his acceptance speech.

Other nominees were Bear McCreary for Call of Duty: Vanguard, Richard Jacques for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Christopher Tin for Old World and Austin Wintory for Aliens: Fireteam Elite.

While the category is new, it is not the first time game music has made a name for itself in the context of the Grammys. In 2012, Wintory was nominated for an award for the soundtrack to Journey. The year before, Tin won a Grammy for the Civilization IV song Baba Yetu.

As far as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is concerned, Ubisoft put an end to the adventure late last year. The game has received its very latest update and the team has moved on to work on upcoming Assassin’s Creed games.
