Associate mayors meet with the new president of LUMA Energy

The Association of Mayors of Puerto Rico met this Friday with the new president of LUMA Energy, Juan Saca, to establish joint work plans with the municipalities, especially in preparation for the hurricane season.

“For the first time, we see a willingness to collaborate with LUMA, and of course, the associated mayors continue to be ready to work together,” said President Luis Javier Hernández Ortiz in written statements.

The municipal executives also discussed the delays in project approvals due to the environmental regulations of the Environmental Act.

“This is a high priority issue, we are going to move to the federal capital soon to continue working on lobbying these cases,” added Hernández Ortiz.

“I have a commitment to Puerto Rico, and that includes the mayors,” Saca said. Saca has held meetings with several associated and federated mayors, including those of Salinas, Loíza, Peñuelas, Sabana Grande and Villalba.

Finally, the mayors addressed the need for funds to continue offering services to the citizenry, especially with the elimination of the Equalization Fund next year.

“This total of 185 million dollars will be distributed to the municipalities according to their income and particular needs, in order to cover the costs of services to citizens,” concluded Hernández Ortiz.
