Asteroid surprises astronomers: it was detected two hours after colliding with Earth, and it fell between Paris and London

Experts in the field called it Sar2667 and luckily it was just a visual spectacle for space enthusiasts. The night of France and nearby countries lit up with the trail that the asteroid had left until it disintegrated in the atmosphere.

It measured only one meter and an expedition was carried out to see if there are any remains in the nearby areas. If any rocks are found, scientists could determine where asteroid Sar2667 came from and the regions of the Solar System through which it has passed.

According to what the International Meteorite Organization, made up of amateur astronomers, reported, “a bright fireball managed to be visible from northern France, some areas of Belgium, the Netherlands and Great Britain.”

If the asteroid is so small, why is it causing concern?

Space rock that may have come from some distant region of the Solar System is not a concern per se. Sar2667 will serve for future studies and analysis of these phenomena. However, the scientific community is alert because the asteroid could have been bigger and nobody saw it coming.

So, if it occurred with a larger rock, it would be impossible to prevent damage, such as the one caused by the Chelyabinsk fireball in Russia in 2013. At that time, a meteorite fell and only caused material damage, but if it had encountered people, they consequences would have been greater.

None of that happened with Sar2667. What we have left of this asteroid was its impact with the atmosphere and the videos that went viral on social networks.
