ASUS Zenbook S13 brings OLED screen and AMD hardware into an ultra-slim | Hands-on video

In May 2022, ASUS introduced the Zenbook S13 OLED, an ultra-thin and compact laptop that fits into the premium category for a number of features, in addition to promising a satisfactory experience in terms of performance and screen.

Have you ever stopped to think about a notebook the size of an A4 sheet of paper? Because this Zenbook fits perfectly in these dimensions. It has dimensions of just 29.7 x 21 centimeters, in addition to 14 millimeters thick, in a body that weighs just over a kilogram. It has a hinge that allows it to open up to 180 degrees without fear of damaging the laptop.

The product has a chassis composed of a combination of magnesium alloy and aluminum, to give a premium and durable look to the user. Speaking of durability, there is a military certification of resistance here, which guarantees the survival of this machine even in extreme places. Not to mention the antimicrobial protection, to strengthen the sanitary part.

Even in such a compact size, the keyboard and trackpad haven’t been sacrificed. The keyboard has a very classic style, but with a very satisfactory key size and spacing. The trackpad has a glass finish and dimensions that make good use of the space on the surface, apart from the integrated number pad.

As you’d imagine on an ultra-thin, the port set doesn’t have a lot of variety. You’ll find three USB Type-C inputs here, all version 3.2 and compatible with DisplayPort, as well as an audio jack for headphones and a microphone.

Starting with the multimedia part, the screen is one of the points that makes this notebook a premium product. Here there is a 13.3-inch OLED panel, which stands out for its very good factory color calibration, in addition to having a resolution of 2880 x 1800 pixels.

And if you think this machine might suffer from the so-called burn-inASUS thought about it and put OLED Care technology, which help protect the monitor by preventing fixed elements for a long time from not leaving the display anymore.

This display is touch sensitive so users can enjoy the touch screen experience and facilities. We have 100% coverage of DCI-P3 colors and a very high brightness level. It just lacks a high refresh rate, which would make animations smoother.

And what about the sound? The S13 comes with two stereo speakers located at the base of the product. They come with optimization by Harman Kardon to ensure good quality and power even with the reduced size.

Still on multimedia, there is the webcam, positioned on the upper edge. Generally, this is a point where manufacturers do not invest much, and this is no different. This model does not go beyond 720p resolution, with no extra features for the user.

For the Zenbook S13, ASUS preferred to put high-performance AMD hardware. The machine comes equipped with a Ryzen 7 6800U processor, 16 GB of RAM in LPDDR5 format and 1 TB of storage via SSD PCIe 4.0.

The internal space is the only item that can be upgraded, but maybe this is not a good idea. That’s because the Samsung unit chosen by the Taiwanese exceeds 6,000 Megabytes per second in reading and writing.

This hardware ends up focusing not only on high performance, but also thinks about avoiding any overheating. That’s because we have a TDP limited to 25 W, so we don’t have any kind of problem with excessive heat in the components.

To keep the slim design, the manufacturer also left out a dedicated video card in this model. This means that the S13 only comes with the integrated graphics that come with the CPU.

But are they enough to run games? Certainly, it’s not the most suitable machine to enjoy the so-called AAA titles, which demand a power that only a dedicated GPU can offer. Even so, some lighter games should run in Full HD with a fluidity that serves to enjoy as much as possible, as long as the extra features are disabled or on bass.

And what did we find on his battery? ASUS put one with a capacity of 67 Wh, mainly thinking about not generating a large volume and weight for this notebook. Despite this, the manufacturer promises up to 19 hours of autonomy.

Of course, in actual use, it shouldn’t come to all of that. But expect here to last something around 10 hours until completely discharged, in use with a Wi-Fi network, medium brightness and balanced energy mode, plus a little more if you just want to marathon series on streaming services.

The charger that is shipped in the box has a power of 65 W. Enough to reach 100% of this device in less than two hours plugged in.

This Zenbook comes with Windows 11 Pro factory installed. Still in terms of software, the machine supports the ASUS Pen 2.0, with more than 4,000 levels of pressure, thanks to the touchscreen present here.

The Zenbook S13 proves to be a good option for an ultra-thin and light consumer laptop. It brings these characteristics without having to dispense with premium construction in durable materials and with protections that guarantee additional resistance.

The multimedia part is certainly one of the positive highlights in it. First for the OLED screen, which seeks to get the colors and brightness right. Second by the sound system, certified by Harman Kardon. We can’t say the same about the webcam, which maintains the basic HD resolution.

In terms of performance, the presence of an AMD Ryzen 7 processor from the 6000 series already shows that this machine does not skimp on delivering high performance. Not to mention the SSD with a very fast writing and reading speed, and the battery that promises long life. A dedicated GPU is missing here to bring new possibilities to this model, but this would also require a gain in weight and thickness of the product.

After all, what is the target audience here? We’re talking about a notebook designed for people who need a very fast machine that is portable, so they can move around with it to work or on trips. Not only thinking about the design, but also about its battery capacity for many hours away from the socket.

On the other hand, people who want a machine for work that requires heavy editions, or even those who want a powerful notebook for gaming, know that this is not the most suitable option. The absence of a dedicated video card makes these experiences more limited and far from the ideal required by these users.

ASUS never launched this model in the Brazilian market. In Europe, it was available for a suggested price of 1,300 euros. A high amount by category standards, but justified by the set it delivers.

In practice, this machine has no direct competitor options in the Windows world. That’s because the presence of a high-resolution OLED panel, a touch-sensitive display and AMD hardware make this set different from what you find in rival lines, such as the Dell XPS.

Already thinking of a more expanded range, the Macbook Air ends up being a competitor more at the height of the machine, only outside the alternatives with the operating system from Microsoft. It’s an ultrathin and light one, with good performance power and has the optimizations that improve the graphics power, but it lags behind in the potential of its storage unit.
