Aterciopelados defends the Amazon in London and urges to save a planet in crisis

LONDON.- The Colombian group Velvetythree-time Latin Grammy winner, performed this week in the British capital to raise funds for the protection of the Amazon and make a call to save a planet and crisis.

Invited by the Amazon Sacred Headwaters Alliance, the members of Aterciopelados played at an evening organized by this association that fights for the protection of biodiversity in the Amazon River and its surroundings, within the London Climate Action Week, which ends tomorrow, 30 of June.

“We took care of the musical part of the event, but there were talks from people, indigenous leaders, who traveled from Peru and Ecuador,” one of the group’s two leaders, Héctor Buitrago, 61, explained to AFP.

Velveteen Fight

Aterciopelados, a group that mixes rock and pop with sounds of Colombian folklore, was born in the 90s and has stood out since its creation for its commitment to the fight for its defense of the environment.

Buitrago, composer and guitarist in the group, believes that this fight for the protection of biodiversity opened the doors to this invitation to the United Kingdom.

“We are known for our ecological proposals, the work we have done. Let’s say that with our music, with what the songs say, our voice is already present. There we already talked a little about the Amazon,” said Buitrago.

The band’s vocalist, Andrea Echeverri, 58, defends the climate commitment that defines part of Aterciopelados’ music.

“The planet is in crisis, talking only about sex… from the first album we started talking about our reality, we tried to find what it was that one wanted to communicate,” said the artist.

“Be more consistent”

For Buitrago, musicians like them contribute to the defense of the environment.

“There are communities that are always defending an ecosystem, protecting it or restoring it. There, one can join in, one can also demand that governments make real changes,” he urged.

“Politicians can be asked to be consistent with what is being signed, what is being said and the agreements they are having. Politicians go to climate summits to tell people what to do, but they arrive on their planes We already know what they are like. We have to be more consistent,” added the artist.

The five-member group, which has three Latin Grammys and 14 nominations for those awards, will return to London at the end of the year to give a concert on November 6, as part of a European tour.

In addition to that European tour, the group has the project of releasing a new album in 2024.

“We are working on a new album, the idea is that it will come out this year,” Echeverri announced.
