Authorities prepare to close Sumner tunnel in two days

We can fear it or prepare for it.

Either way, it’s coming up and after tomorrow drivers will be following detour signs so crews can repair the Sumner Tunnel and here’s what you need to know.

Most cars will head for the Ted Williams Tunnel and Tobin Bridge, but even then plan ahead as there will be delays.

Approximately 39,000 cars travel through the tunnel, with much of the traffic coming from Logan International Airport.

If you’re looking to get to Logan, Massport suggests allowing an extra two hours to get to the airport or take public transportation.

MBTA CEO Phil Eng says routes have been expanded to accommodate new riders.

“The entire blue line will be free in both directions. You won’t need a Charliecard or a Charlie ticket, it’s completely open,” Eng said.

Travelers can use the Silver Line or Blue Line to access the airport along with the commuter rail, the Hingham Hull Ferry, and the Logan Water Taxi.

Massport encourages drivers and passengers to download its app and access the Mass 511 website, which has information on real-time delays and travel times based on their routes.
