While Avatar 2: The Way of the Water breaks all records, we still all wonder today how the underwater scenes were shot. Disney Studios/20th Century Studios today released some amazing new footage from the set.

36 meters long, 18 wide, 9 deep. It is the size of pool in which most of the underwater images were filmed by James Cameron and his teams. It is this shooting in “almost” real conditions which resulted in such stunning images.

State-of-the-art sensors, underwater suits, underwater vehicle to film: all the means were given to the director so that he could shoot this cinematographic masterpiece.

On the various images published today, we can see in particular thestudio interior shooting. Beyond thehuge basin which allowed the realization of the aquatic scenes, many new accessories used by the actors illustrate the extent to which the director has the attention to detail.

We also learn today that the first test shoots were made with the actors suspended in the air, rather than in the water, while imitating aquatic movements. This filming technique was then immediately rejected by the director: “You want people to look like they’re underwater, so they have to be underwater.”

Avatar 2: The Way of the Water, was it born out of James Cameron’s passion for scuba diving?

If we can wonder where James Cameron got his inspiration to make these two films, there are many analyzes justifying the turn taken by the film by the director’s passion for scuba diving. In 2012, Cameron had for example broken the depth record of solo dive by traveling – aboard a state-of-the-art underwater vehicle – to the deepest part of the Mariana Trench 7 kilometers deep. A few years later, he even joked that he made blockbuster movies only to finance his passion and his underwater explorations.
