For a long time we speculated about the value Avatar: The Way of Water would be profitable. The giant blockbuster is considered one of the most expensive film of all time and has reportedly only been in production around $400 million tasted In addition, there is at least 200 million in marketing budget on top of that. JamesCameron has now revealed that the film is actually already profitable and the planned sequels are secured. So far it was known that Avatar 3, 4 and 5 are planned, but only part three was really confirmed. The other two sequels were made dependent on the success of Avatar 2. Avatar 4 and 5 would only be released if this brought in enough money. For the third part, James Cameron already has it most of the scenes shot a 9 hour cut (!) is probably already available to the Disney film studio. In an interview, Cameron has now revealed that the next six or seven years of his life are now finally planned for the sequels to Avatar: The Way of Water.

“I know what I’m going to do for the next six or seven years”

“It looks like with the momentum it’s having now, the movie is going to be slightly past the breakeven point in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wriggle out, I have to do these other sequels, ‘ Cameron said in conversation. “I know what I’m going to do for the next six or seven years.”

He also added, “I’m sure we’ll be discussing the Avatar 3 plan with the top people at Disney very soon.”

Part three, filmed in conjunction with Avatar 2, is “almost done,” Cameron said. A part of Avatar 4 has also been filmed and the scripts for all sequels have already been written.

“We started a real franchise at this point. We started a saga that can now span multiple films,” he said.

Avatar 2 is already among the top 10 most successful films

As we previously reported, Avatar: The Way of Water has now passed the $1.5 billion mark in global box office earnings. This makes it one of the ten most successful films of all time.

Cameron has now made three films that have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, including 2009’s Avatar 1 ($2.92 billion), Titanic ($2.2 billion) and The Way of Water ($1.5 billion and counting).

Avatar 3 is slated to hit theaters in December 2024. Part four and five then every two years in 2026 and 2028. For the latter two films, James Cameron could perhaps even give up the director’s chair and let a new director take the helm.

“I think at some point – I don’t know if that’s after part three or part four – I want to hand the baton over to a director that I trust so I can do some other stuff that I’m interested in. Or maybe neither. I don’t know,” Cameron testified.

In Germany, Avatar 2 is currently breaking all kinds of records anyway, and internationally, the 2 billion dollar mark is currently being approached. Although some doubted it and the sequels after part three were initially made dependent on the success of Avatar: The Way of Water, everything looks like the next big franchise could await us here.

How do you see it: does Avatar deserve the achievement? Is the movie really that good? Or does James Cameron simply know how to lure viewers into the cinema halls? Feel free to write that in the comments! By the way: You can read the first details about the plot of Avatar 3 here.
