Following the announcement of the 2023 Oscar nominees, Internet users rushed to torrent platforms to intercept nominated films like Spielberg’s The Fabelmans. This phenomenon repeats itself every year, with the ceremony invariably prompting an increased number of hacks.

We get closer every day to the Oscars, the most anticipated film awards ceremony of the year. The next edition will take place on Sunday March 12 from 11:50 p.m. on Canal+. A few weeks ago, the list of nominated films was revealed. And as usual, Internet users rushed to torrent platforms to download them illegally.

Among all the categories, it is especially that of the best film which is scrutinized closely. Certainly, the increased media attention opens the door to a new audience, which ultimately translates into additional revenue. However, there is also a flip side to this phenomenon: people opting for piracy to discover the movies.

Oscars: which films were the most pirated after their nomination?

Torrent Freak looked at the estimated number of downloads through torrent sites following the nominations. And to establish a telling picture that illustrates the phenomenon well. Almost all downloads have been boosted by 10-90%.

  • In the West, nothing new: 61%
  • Avatar: The Way of the Water: -9%
  • Elvis: 43%
  • Everything Everywhere All at Once: 60%
  • Tar: 89%
  • The Banshees of Inisherin: 63%
  • The Fabelmans: 58%
  • Top Gun: Maverick 15%
  • Triangle of Sadness: 68%

Looking through the list, we notice that two films did not see their piracy counter explode following their nomination. This is Avatar 2 (-9%) and Top Gun: Maverick (15%). However, this is very easily explained. These two blockbusters have already had the right to enormous coverage on the sidelines of their release. The additional exposure generated by their appointment did little to change their media coverage.

As a reminder, Marvel got its very first Oscar nomination for a role. Angela Bassett was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
