Bochum-Dahlhausen.
The bathing light on the Ruhr in Bochum-Dahlhausen showed red more often than green last year. The FDP is now demanding an additional yellow phase.

The bathing area on the Ruhr in Bochum-Dahlhausen opened for the first time last year. However, swimming was prohibited on 42 out of 78 days. The reason: the bathing traffic light was red. The FDP is now making a proposal.

“Contrary to what might be assumed, the traffic light is not about evaluating the current as a source of danger, but about the existing water quality,” says a press release from the FDP. The cause was intermittent heavy rainfall. “Heavy rainfall can flush polluted surface water and wastewater from sewage treatment plants into rivers, causing water quality to deteriorate,” the city said at the time.

Badeampel on the Ruhr: FDP demands yellow phase for independent bathing

The FDP parliamentary group had already made a request to the city in August last year. The reason for this was previous discussions that the bathing area was often closed. When asked about measures for a possible increase in bathing days, the administration acknowledged weaknesses in the previous system. On the one hand, the technical prerequisites for more precise forecasts are not yet available, on the other hand, the system has so far been deliberately designed conservatively.

“In the coming bathing season, the city of Bochum urgently needs to further develop the system. Instead of the flat distinction between red and green, the addition of a ‘yellow phase’ would also be conceivable for us, which would enable independent bathing in the Ruhr meadows on certain days,” demands Luisa-Maximiliane Pischel, deputy leader of the FDP parliamentary group. One cannot be satisfied with only 36 bathing days in the entire bathing season.
