Elected best action game of 2022 at the recent Game Awards, Bayonet 3 it is a complex and multifaceted game whose components deserve to be properly explored. For this reason PlatinumGames has launched Umbran Studies, a series of in-depth videos that have been satisfying our thirst for knowledge for months.

The latest episode, introduced by Game Director Yusuke Miyata and presented by Lead Environment Artist Yasutaka Maeki, dig deep into the process of making the environments of Bayonetta 3. If you have already played the exclusive for Nintendo Switch, then you will know that the adventure takes place in multiple areas of the globe in various parallel universes, also touching on some places already visited in the previous chapters of the series, suitably revisited for the ‘occasion. The wide-ranging narration allowed the artists of PlatinumGames to indulge in the creation of locations full of fantastic elements such as Thule Island and Ginnungagap, and cities closer to our reality, an aspect that Maeki did not hesitate to list among the strengths of Bayonetta 3.

The dynamic action generated by the use of Hell Demons and the powers that allow the witch to move quickly have inevitably influenced the design of the environments of Bayonetta 3, which are much wider than those that formed the background to the events of the previous chapters, as well as richer in clashes and hidden secrets. To make it even more spectacular, PlatinumGames has worked hard to implement environmental destructibility to nearly all buildings without sacrificing framerate, an achievement Maeki seems to be very proud of.
