French social media app BeReal has secured support from Spotify. In the future, US users will be able to integrate Spotify elements directly into BeReal posts, for example to show what they are currently listening to. This works automatically: if Spotify is running on the cell phone while a BeReal post is being created, the app will directly integrate the current song into the post.

As with other apps with Spotify integration, other users can then play a preview of the song directly in the BeReal application. This also works in the dating app Tinder, for example. In order to embed Spotify, one needs to link their BeReal account to the Spotify account. This is possible, for example, in the settings of the BeReal app.

“By combining Spotify audio with BeReal, we’re adding another layer of authentic customization to BeReal,” Spotify said in a press release. BeReal is a comparatively young social media app from France. It was originally released in 2020. So far, the Spotify integration only works in the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Australia. Other markets are to be supplied with the feature later, there is no date for Germany.

The BeReal concept: one post a day, nothing more, nothing less. Users cannot choose the time of this post themselves. Each day, the app provides a random two-minute window in which users should record and publish a post. Both the front and the back camera of the mobile phone must be activated. Other posts can only be seen by users who have posted themselves.

BeReal focuses on the authenticity of what is shown: the fact that users cannot choose the time of their photos and the post themselves is intended to prevent cherry picking. Instead of elaborately staged holiday photos, the banal everyday life should move – at least that’s the idea. Pictures taken with BeReal may not be edited.

For the past year, BeReal has been touted by many as the next big social app. Recently, however, BeReal has lost users recently reported the New York Times based on Apptopia numbers. Last October, 15 million people are said to have used BeReal every day, in March it was said to have been only 6 million. BeReal does not publish any official user numbers itself. Nevertheless, the app has found numerous imitators, including TikTok.
