Google has just announced the deployment of a new system of automatic updates on Android smartphones. When one of your apps crashes and a more stable version exists on the Play Store, you will be notified directly with a prompt.

Like every year, Google will deploy the new iteration of its mobile OS at the start of the next school year. Android 14 will deliver a slew of new features aimed at improving the user experience. But before that, Google is about to roll out a new feature that will take over a wide variety of Android versions. This will be of great help to you when you are confronted with an application that is acting up.

The Play Store will prompt users to update the app if it crashes and a more stable version is available. The prompt will allow you to quickly proceed with the update which will potentially integrate bug fixes. However, Google has not specified when this new system will be imposed on our devices. Here is a screenshot that shows what the dialog looks like:

Android: a new update system soon to be deployed

Google specifies that developers will not have to do anything to activate this feature. In fact, the prompts will automatically be sent when the Play Store has a newer version of the offending app with a “statistically relevant and lower crash rate”. Good thing you don’t need to be using a recent version of Android to benefit from this handy update system.

According to Google, the feature will be available on all devices running Android 7.0 or later. In other words, even your aging phone will be entitled to it. We grant you that this function will be useless if you have just downloaded an application and it malfunctions. It is also possible that the update does not resolve the bug observed. If you get stuck, installing the APK file from a previous version of the app may help you get around the problem.
