Government must get crisis under control
On Friday, the German Bundestag discussed the motion of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group “Support municipalities in the migration crisis – implement demands from the municipal summit” for the first time. The chairman of the working group on local politics, André Berghegger, explains:
“The municipal summit of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group on asylum and refugee policy has shown the sometimes dramatic situation very clearly. Our country is in a serious migration crisis, which requires decisive action by the federal government. Nevertheless, the traffic light government is not making the slightest effort to finally get this crisis under control.
We take communities seriously. In our application, we address the demands of the municipalities that help them beyond financial support and limit irregular migration.
The federal government is paying off its financial support nicely: Of the around 2.8 billion euros that will be made available to the federal states and local authorities this year, only a part is actually available for the performance of tasks: According to the decision of November 2022, 1, 5 billion euros reserved for refugees from Ukraine, so that ultimately around one billion euros remain for the federal states and municipalities to cope with additional expenses caused by refugees. It was clear from the start that that wasn’t enough. If Federal Interior Minister Faeser is surprised that the municipalities are already calling for further help in April, this shows ignorance or naivety. Neither is good.”
