Two Point Studios | August 9, 2022

“If I were the dean, things would be very different here!” Great, dear students, let’s get started! With Two Point Campus you can start the virtual test run and build the university of your dreams in the economic simulation. But instead of mathematics, physics, sociology or art history, your students in Two Point Campus learn what will really help them later in life.

Chivalry, for example, at least if they intend to break a lance on the tournament ground. Or espionage! How do you think James Bond learned all that stuff? About a VHS course? Probably not! The funny subjects and gameplay variations in the later course of the game provide variety and in the campaign the challenge increases with each new university.

If you only want to build the university of your dreams, you can let your imagination run wild in sandbox mode. The humorous presentation and the beginner-friendliness with a pleasant learning curve make Two Point Campus an absolute recommendation, also for all newbies in the genre of construction games.

Tribute Games | June 16, 2022

Oh yes, the 90s … sinking the last lire into the vending machine together with all the other children in the hotel on a holiday in Italy and rubbing your hands sore on the controller with friends from the neighborhood on the Mega-Drive at home. Brawlers were mostly a communal experience in the “good old days”. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge conjures up this spirit, in which you gather with up to six players in front of the console or online.

It is always important to polish the feeding board of Shredder’s nasty henchmen with the Turtles and their friends. You tackle this in the classic Arcade mode, in which you fight your way from one beautifully designed level to the next, or you play the Story mode, in which there are many secrets to be discovered and additional things to be unlocked.

From the animations, music, the polish of the gameplay and many small details you can see the attention to detail of the developers and that they really understood the genre of retro brawlers. A must for every 90’s kid and anyone who wants to be.

8th place: Return to Monkey Island

Terrible Toy Box | September 19, 2022

Return to Monkey Island, as the name suggests, takes you back to the mysterious Monkey Island that has long been a cult icon in the video game world. This part of the point-and-click adventure is something special, however, because the creator of the series, Ron Gilbert himself, is back in the director’s chair of the pirate shack.

The story is wonderfully funny, as you are used to from Monkey Island, and the German soundtrack, which was added later, makes you feel nostalgic. With the puzzles in the game, you can expect decent adventure fare based on the classic Lucas Arts scheme. Puzzles are never too difficult and are even suitable for beginners with a hotspot display and puzzle help.

A few nice innovations make it possible to find your way back into the story even after putting the game aside for a few days. The music with traditional catchy tunes, but also completely new compositions, does the rest, so that no fan of the series is left indifferent.

7th place: Portal Companion Collection

Valve Corporation | June 28, 2022

If you’ve often wondered why the cake should be a lie when you’re surfing the Internet, you’ve never played Portal and should do so as soon as possible! Already the first part inspired with its incredibly creative portal puzzles, but it was quite short.

The sequel knighted the royal court of video game classics. The Portal Companion Collection includes both games and performs on the Switch (buy now €333.00 ) a surprisingly useful motion control. The technical implementation for the switch is also well done, everything always runs smoothly.

The co-op mode of the second part is great and can be played both online and in split-screen on a console. The star in the circus ring is still the nasty AI Glados, who hasn’t lost any of her charm and wit and is set to great music both in German and especially in the English version. There are few games that we would say you have to play, even if you don’t really relate to the genre, Portal is definitely one of them.

6th place: OlliOlli World

Roll7 | February 8, 2022

OlliOlli was an indie hit that mainly attracted attention because of its charm and high level of difficulty. The sequel, OlliOlli World, has retained the charm but completely reinvented it and made the high level of difficulty entirely optional. The smooth, hipster-style gameplay of the wannabe Tony Hawk characters is much more accessible than before and extremely fun thanks to its great level design and relaxed campaign.

The new Adventure Time-style look takes some getting used to at first, but fits the genre well. The soundtrack creates a feel-good atmosphere with LoFi tones. You skate through the levels with flips, grinds and jumps and, once you get the hang of the controls, you’ll soon be chasing the high score. The good controls and the motivating online mode ensure that you can enjoy the game for a long time. Provided, of course, that hipster presentation doesn’t put you off too much.
