The Union is demanding more speed from the federal government for better mobile phone reception on trains. CDU MP Ronja Kemmer told the German Press Agency that, despite major announcements, Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) had not yet implemented a single measure to improve mobile phone coverage on trains.

A schedule for the conversion of the train windows, which are impermeable to mobile communications, and an upgrade of the old WiFi amplifiers in the trains, especially for the fast 5G mobile communications standard, is urgently needed. “In addition, we are increasing the pressure on Deutsche Bahn – we want to legally oblige them to provide infrastructure for mobile communications technology,” added Kemmer.

CDU MP Thomas Jarzombek said: “We finally need gigabit on the train. Streaming, surfing and video conferencing must be possible without restrictions on the train. Everything else cannot meet our requirements for attractive long-distance transport.”

A gigabit network in all trains should also be aimed for.
