Madrid, Spain.- The President of the United States, Joe Biden, stated this Thursday that he will speak with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in an attempt to calm tensions with Beijing after the shooting down of a Chinese spy balloon over US territory.

“We are pursuing competition, not the conflict with China. We are not looking for a new Cold War,” Biden said at a press conference, adding that the United States will continue in contact with the Chinese side, regardless of the latest friction between the two powers over the aerial objects, CNN has reported.

Biden has thus stressed that it is important to “keep the lines of communication open” between diplomats and the military. However, he has made it clear that the “violation” of his sovereignty is “unacceptable”, for which he has stressed that Washington is not going to apologize for the shooting down.

“We will act to protect our country,” he has sentenced. Biden has not specified when she will speak with his Chinese counterpart. The last conversation between the US president and Xi took place during a meeting in November on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Indonesia, according to The Hill.
