Washington, Apr 20 (EFE).- The President of the United States, Joe Biden, spoke this Thursday with the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, about the recent trip to China by the EU leader and both expressed their commitment to continue helping Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion.

The conversation comes two weeks after von der Leyen traveled to Beijing with French President Emmanuel Macron and met Chinese President Xi Jinping.

At that meeting, Von der Leyen considered China’s position on the war “crucial” and said he hoped that the Asian country would promote peace “through support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Xi limited himself to acknowledging that “the crisis is protracted” and that it is “difficult to resolve”, and again called for “calm and rationality” from all parties.

Two weeks later, Biden and von der Leyen stressed the commitment of the US and the EU to continue helping Ukraine to have the “economic and security assistance it needs” and to continue “working closely to impose costs on the Kremlin for the Russian aggression.

Also according to the White House, both shared their “commitment to upholding the norms of international order, human rights, and fair trade practices” and reaffirmed the “importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.” .

Taiwan, with whom Washington does not maintain official relations, is one of the biggest sources of conflict between China and the US, mainly because Washington is Taiwan’s main arms supplier and would be its greatest military ally in the event of a war. with the Asian giant.

The former speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, visited Taiwan last August and with that trip she deeply irritated the Chinese government, which also raised the tension when the Taiwanese leader, Tsai Ing-wen, met with the current president of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy this April in California.

Biden and Von der Leyen also spoke of the need to accelerate efforts to transition to clean energy.
