Bit noise, the processor podcast: chip factories in Germany 2023

In December 2020, the European Union unpacked the chip bazooka: 43 billion euros in subsidies are intended to promote the development of a powerful semiconductor industry. It’s now 2023 and the “EU Chips Act” has still not been decided. The US model, the Chips Act, is already bearing more fruit – and Taiwan, South Korea, China and Japan are also shoveling billions into chip fabs.

What is the current situation of German and European chip manufacturers? After all, with Infineon one of the ten largest chip companies in the world is based in Germany, in Dresden and Ireland there are large fabs from Globalfoundries and Intel. Intel is planning a giant fab in Magdeburg and Infineon, Bosch, Vishay and Wolfspeed are also building new fabs. According to speculation, even the world’s leading chip manufacturer (foundry) TSMC is coming to Dresden.
