For the activist, the time has come to “charge big companies and big funds, which said they would take initiatives and invest in black entrepreneurs, to fulfill their promises”.

“The real work we have now is accountability for these symbolic gestures”, he stressed.

“I was with a group of black entrepreneurs this week and I realized that this type of event is extremely important. It is necessary to meet and talk about experiences, difficulties and tools”, stressed the North American activist.

Ay? Tometi also said that it is very important for the black community to see itself reflected in leadership positions, whether in the business sector or in the government sector.

“We have to see black and indigenous people represented”, he said, adding that what is really important are “the policies implemented for ‘ordinary people’, people from the favelas, in indigenous communities”.

“Black people are the majority in this country and the data we see (on discrimination) are alarming”, he said, considering that “for a multicultural and diverse society such as Brazil” is not “doing enough” to combat this discrimination.
