A tribute to Chadwick Boseman

I have to find my words. I’m so nervous. My heart won’t stop beating. The late Tony Morrison said that your life is already a miracle of chance waiting for you to command its fate. But for this destiny to manifest itself, I think it takes the courage to have faith. It takes patience, as we just heard. And that requires real knowledge of yourself. It’s not easy because the past is tortuous and has many unexpected twists and turns, but by the grace of God I’m standing here. I am grateful here.

We embarked on this journey together with love. We cried, we loved, we healed. We were surrounded every day by the light and spirit of Chadwick Boseman. It brings us joy to know that with this historic “Black Panther” saga, it is a part of his legacy to have helped lead us. We showed the world what Black unity, leadership and love looks like, behind and in front of the camera. To Marvel fans, thank you for embracing these characters and showing us so much love. This prize belongs to all of you, to all of us. Thanks.

It is therefore the first time any actor has won a major award for a role at Marvel. But when you take a step back from this kind of film, winning this award seems raise even more of the feat. Indeed, before this ceremony, only four actors – all male – have even been nominated for a Golden Globe after starring in a superhero movie. First of all Jack Nicholson, for his role as the Joker in Tim Burton’s Batman in 1989, he was beaten by Morgan Freeman for the role of Hoke Colburn in Miss Daisy and her driver. Heath Ledger had won the prize for his interpretation of the Joker in The Dark Knight in 2008. In 2016, Ryan Reynolds had been nominated for his role as Deadpool in the eponymous film, but beaten by Ryan Gosling for the role of Sebastian in La La Land. In 2019, Joaquin Phoenix had won the award for his role… as the Joker, again, in the eponymous film. Note, Ledger and Phoenix, and DC Comics with them, still have a head start since they had also won an Oscar for these roles.
