“With the M 1000 XR concept car, we are offering a first preview of BMW Motorrad’s third M model in our anniversary year. We have developed the M 1000 XR, M XR for short, on the basis of the current S 1000 XR, S 1000 RR and M 1000 RR, as a long-distance sports bike with great capability and supersport driving dynamics for both the road and for the circuit”, explains Dominik BlassBMW Product Manager.

The letter M is synonymous worldwide with racing successas well as a fascination for high-performance BMW models, and is aimed at customers with particularly high demands in terms of performance, exclusivity and individuality. BMW Motorrad already introduced the successful strategy of the M car range for motorcycles in 2019 and has been offering M and M Performance special equipment ever since. With the M RR and MR, the first two independent M models from BMW Motorrad were presented in the following years.

The prototype model M 1000 XR, in the anniversary year ‘100 years of BMW Motorrad’ -and almost 100 years of motorsport tradition- is a foretaste of a super sports bike that dominates the disciplines: road, long journeys and track use with equal poise and level previously unknown performance in this segment.

FAQ

The four-cylinder engine from the BMW S 1000 RR super sports car with BMW ShiftCam technology is used as a basis for variable valve timing and lift. With an engine power of more than 200 hp, a DIN curb weight of only 223 kg at full load and chassis technology, aerodynamics and control electronics designed for both road use, long journeys and fast track laps, The new M XR opens up dynamic riding dimensions as a crossover bike in the sportbike segment previously reserved for purebred superbikes. Further weight reduction and even greater driving dynamics can be achieved with the M Competition package, which is available as an optional extra from the factory. The top speed of the M XR prototype is around 280 km/h.

FAQ

In addition to powertrain and suspension technology, aerodynamics was also a key element in the development requirements for the M XR prototype. Spoilers have been included on the new M XR with the aim of ensuring superior driving stability even at high speeds despite the increased engine power. They serve especially to achieve the best possible contact between the wheels and the road surface, especially when accelerating and at high speeds. The additional load on the front wheel counteracts the tendency to lift the front wheel during acceleration, the traction control system has to regulate less, more motive power is converted to acceleration and the driver gets a faster lap time. The specifically oriented front wheel seating position ensures better control of the bike, especially in supersport mode.

And just like the M RR and MR, the new M XR features the M brake. It was developed using experience gained with racing brakes and experience from racing with BMW Motorrad in the Superbike World Championship. The M brake calipers feature a blue anodized coating along with the famous M logo.
