There are problems with the floor at the Bockmühle comprehensive school in Essen’s Altendorf district. An entrance is blocked, the school is closed.

Due to unexpected problems with the floor, classes at the Altendorf comprehensive school Bockmühle had to be canceled on Friday (January 13) and Monday (January 16). On Thursday, all 1,400 students were sent home early. This was reported by the headmistress Julia Gajewski at the request of our editorial team and the city of Essen in a statement.

On Thursday, tiles had burst out in front of an entryway; the suspicion of a landslide below the building could not be substantiated. Nevertheless, there is a risk that the ground will sag or has sagged. Alumni speculate on the Internet that it must be a burst water pipe – but such assumptions cannot be proven at the moment.

Representatives of the city’s real estate industry were on site, and a final decision on what needs to be done is expected to be made on Monday. According to the city of Essen, “the students switch to distance learning” for at least that long.

Entrance must remain locked

It is clear that an important entrance on the ground floor must remain closed until then. Because the number of escape routes is therefore too small, no lessons can take place on site.

The building of the Bockmühle, Essen’s first and oldest comprehensive school, is considered to be completely dilapidated and is to be replaced by a new building in the next few years. Last autumn, the Bockmühle was repeatedly hit by arsonists.
