Body of fifth bridge collapse victim found

BALTIMORE.- Authorities reported that they recovered the body of a fifth victim who had been missing since a bridge collapsed in Baltimore more than a month ago.

On Wednesday, the body of Miguel Ángel Luna González, 49, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, was found, the Unified Rescue Command reported.

Six members of a road crew died after falling into the water on March 26 when the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being struck by a container ship.

So far the remains of five people have been recovered. José Mynor López, the sixth missing person, has not been found. All of the deceased were immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

Rescuers on Wednesday found one of the missing construction vehicles in the water and notified the Maryland State Police, officials said. Investigators from the state police, the Maryland Transportation Authority and the FBI went to the scene and found the body inside a red truck. The state police underwater recovery team also attended.

“We remain dedicated to recovery operations, knowing that behind every person lost in this tragedy is a beloved family,” Maryland State Police Superintendent Roland Butler said in a statement. “Along with local, state and federal agencies, we ask that everyone extend their sincere condolences and support to the families at this difficult time.”

The container ship that crashed into a bridge pillar has remained at the scene since the incident, but authorities plan to move it to allow transit through the Port of Baltimore to resume. Officials hope to be able to remove it by May 10, according to a statement issued by the Port of Baltimore.
