O director of the Oncology service at Hospital Santo António, who signs the book together with nutritionist Ana Rita Lopes, spoke to Lusa about the work he assumes to be “a practical guide”.

“This is a book that tries to convey to patients, their families, people who have friends with oncological disease in a simple way the scientific teachings that exist”, described the specialist.

According to the co-author of the book, this was “requested three years ago” by a cancer patient who he treated and to whom he dedicates the work, Rita, and who challenged him to write to give “simple answers” to those who suffer from this disease.

This effort, listed António Araújo, resulted in answers on “what cancer is, how it develops, how the diagnosis is made, what signs and symptoms people may have, what staging is done (assessment of the extent of cancer ) and what it is for”.

“All of these are questions that patients ask us on a daily basis”, noted the director of the Oncology service, also recalling the questions “why do I have to undergo chemotherapy, what is chemotherapy, immunotherapy” whose answers are part of from the book.

Nutrition also takes place, answering “all the questions that patients ask about diets, what they can and cannot eat, alkaline diets, what can be drunk, fruits, etc”, he added.

“In our clinical life we have been collecting a series of questions that patients have always asked us and we have tried in this book to give them an answer, a scientific answer, based on scientific evidence”, said António Araújo, who also noted the fact that in the end of the work there will be a bibliography that patients can – if they want to deepen their knowledge – consult.

The idea for the book, he confessed to Lusa, “has been germinating for some time”, but it was from the conversation he had with the patient and the need that, he realized, she had that he decided to move forward.

The presentation is scheduled for 18:30, in the auditorium of the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library, in the gardens of the Palácio de Cristal, in Porto.
