Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. is dead. The native Bavarian died on Saturday at the age of 95 in the Vatican, as the Holy See announced.

Francis, Benedict’s successor, had previously announced at the general audience that Joseph Ratzinger was “very ill”. Francis had asked the faithful for a “special prayer”.

Joseph Ratzinger led as Benedict XVI. from 2005 to 2013 the Catholic Church. He was the first German Pope in 482 years. Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger was born in Marktl am Inn in 1927 and was from 1977 Archbishop of Munich and Freising. In 1989 he was appointed head of the Vatican Faith Authority. When he left office on February 28, 2013, Benedict XVI. only the second pope (after Celestine V in 1294) who voluntarily resigned.
