There is now movement in the discussion about the simplest possible ways of generating electricity privately. After initial hesitation, the powerful industry association VDE has now fully decided to support so-called balcony power plants.

The Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (VDE) even came up with the current regulations regarding everything that needs to be observed if small solar systems are to be connected to the power grid. And these seemed more like a bureaucratic and technical hurdle to many interested parties. However, the VDE did not want to deviate from a few basic points such as special connection technology.

Now the association is making a decent turnaround. In a position paper published today, the VDE advocates comprehensive deregulation of balcony power plants. Accordingly, one is now advocating that the minimum limit for the feed-in power of such a system be raised from 600 to 800 watts. Users should also not necessarily have to use a power plug, a normal Schuko plug should be sufficient.

Just do it!

Furthermore, the VDE no longer sees a need for the consumer to install a new electricity meter with the appropriate features. Rather, operation should also be possible with an old meter with a rotating disc, which then simply moves backwards when it is fed into the grid. And approval from the local grid operator is no longer considered necessary: ”In order to reduce the bureaucratic hurdles to a minimum, in future it should only be necessary to register or deregister the mini power generation system with the Federal Network Agency or to make changes to report to the plant,” it said.

The manufacturers of such products should be held responsible for safety. They have to ensure that the systems work within the framework of the specifications and that the user is provided with a description of the safe assembly and commissioning. The consumer only has to buy a corresponding system, hang the solar panel on the balcony or in a similarly suitable place, plug in and fill out a registration form on the Internet if the new recommendation is accepted.
