UA Russian warship sailing “close to the United Kingdom” in the North Sea was followed Wednesday evening by the British Royal Navy.
She said her warship HMS Portland, a Type 23 frigate, was watching the Russian guided-missile frigate Admiral Gorshkov and the accompanying tanker Kama as they cruised in international waters near the Great -Brittany.
Escorting warships in “UK territorial waters and adjacent sea areas is a routine activity for the Royal Navy”, she added, however.
HMS Portland joined the Norwegian coast guard vessel Bergen as Russian ships moved south in the Norwegian Sea, the Royal Navy said.
“By maintaining a visible and persistent presence, the Royal Navy upholds maritime law and deters malicious activity to protect our nation’s interests,” said Commander Ed Moss-Ward of HMS Portland.
