The video game Goose Goose Duck was released in October 2021, but it was only at the beginning of 2023 that its popularity exploded after one of the singers of the South Korean group BTS performed there in public.

It’s an unexpected boost that the developers of Goose Goose Duck have received. This video game brings together up to 16 players embodying geese around a concept combining mini-games and investigation. If the title of Gaggle Studios was released on October 3, 2021, it is only for a few weeks that a massive interest surrounds the game. All thanks to a singer of the South Korean boy band BTS, says polygon.

In November, V (whose real name is Kim Taehyung), one of the band members, performed at Goose Goose Duck and shared his games on the Weverse app, one of the most popular in South Korea. Faced with a large and engaged audience, the title’s statistics soared.

Over 563,000 concurrent players

Over the past three months, the site SteamDB recorded the massive arrival of new players on the Steam platform: against just over 5,000 in October, they were over 563,000 on January 5. A number such as Goose Goose Duck joined the top 10 games with the most simultaneous players on the platform. The independent title thus finds itself alongside Grand Theft Auto 5, PUBG: Battlegrounds or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

The success is such that the servers hosting the game sessions of Goose Goose Duck did not hold. On January 2, the game’s creators even apologized on Twitter, and assured that they would quickly increase their hosting capacities.

“We were expecting a big uptick in players, but not as much,” the devs said on Twitter.

Mechanics similar to Among Us

The game Goose Goose Duck uses the principle popularized during the confinements linked to Covid-19 by Among Us. Here, they are not astronauts, but geese who must perform a series of tasks. But imposters hide in the crew to eliminate each member and win the game. The games are punctuated by phases of vocal exchanges where everyone can, according to their strategy, accuse a player or defend themselves from being an impostor.

The mechanics may be similar, but the copy stands out from the original with its quirky spirit. First, by placing the players in the shoes of birds. But also by offering many customization elements. On this plan, Goose Goose Duck is much more advanced. Finally, it is also by its price that the video game is distinguished. Unlike the 3.99 euros requested by Among Us, the Gaggle Studios title is free. It remains to be seen whether Goose Goose Duck will resist the fad, which quickly fell back to its predecessor.
