If you want to buy a gaming laptop, you may find an exciting offer for yourself in a current Amazon promotion. Many manufacturers are on board, including HP, Lenovo and MSI. Not all “folding computers” come in the form of a gaming laptop, but a surprising number are equipped with a Geforce RTX 3050, 3060, 3070 and 3080. The background to the campaign is certainly the launch of the new RTX 4000 Mobile series. Laptops that have been on the market for a long time have to go – the prices are correspondingly low. At the same time, manufacturers initially insist on the high recommended prices for their new products. This will probably only change when laptops are widely available and available for a certain period of time. Against this background, the older generation naturally remains attractive. While we were writing the article, some discounts had already disappeared and we had to delete the products from the listing immediately. So there seems to be some demand.

What should I look out for in a gaming laptop?

Retailers and manufacturers like to call their notebooks gaming laptops, even if they are actually not suitable for games. They usually make themselves suspicious by focusing on the CPU and not the graphics card. Caution is always required with integrated graphics units, since they are not suitable for modern games – it’s a different story with free-2-play titles and classics. The CPU is of course also important, but in the end the performance stands and falls with the built-in graphics card. And it doesn’t matter whether you use a laptop from HP, Acer, Lenovo or Asus. No manufacturer can pull performance out of a hat apart from the facts. The built-in display is just as important as the graphics card. A TN panel should not be used in a laptop due to the lack of viewing angle stability – VA and IPS panels are recommended. The refresh rate is also becoming increasingly important. This may not apply to leisurely strategy games, but shooters benefit enormously from high Hz numbers. And that’s where the graphics card comes into play again, which should deliver sufficient fps. Whether you go for a gaming laptop with a large or small battery depends on where you play and how heavy and big you want the device to be. On the terrace or on the train, there may not be a socket at all. You should generally refrain from the idea of getting a lot of performance and high endurance in a gaming laptop. There are certainly differences, but the battery runtimes known from smartphones are more a wish than reality under gaming load.

Buy a gaming laptop up to 1,400 euros: With Geforce RTX 3050 (Ti) & 3060

Which gaming laptop you should buy depends on the size of your wallet. The Geforce RTX 3050 is often used for devices around 1,000 euros. This is not to be confused with the full-fledged desktop model of the same name, which offers more performance. But it’s not entirely unsuitable either. Even in modern titles, it is usually sufficient for Full HD and high details, but ray tracing only manages it with major drawbacks. The Geforce RTX 3050 just marks the entry into Nvidia’s RTX universe. But DLSS, an AI-powered upscaling technique, also supports them. Games that can handle it can still conjure up some performance. The Geforce RTX 3050 Ti and 3060 promise more performance. However, general performance statements are difficult to make for laptops, since notebook manufacturers have a lot of leeway when it comes to energy allocation.

Buy a gaming laptop up to 2,600 euros: Up to Geforce RTX 3080 Ti & 360 Hz

Beyond 1,500 euros, gamers naturally have the option of using a more powerful gaming laptop. Not all models rely on top graphics cards here. Here and there the focus is also on the display brightness, size or CPU. In this respect, the graphics cards in this price segment are very diverse. GPUs such as the Geforce RTX 3050, Geforce RTX 3070 Ti or Geforce RTX 3080 are part of the Amazon sales. In terms of manufacturers, MSI, HP, Dell and Lenovo are also involved. The fastest display on a discounted gaming laptop from MSI delivers an incredible 360 Hz – this is probably not the case with a Geforce RTX 3070 Ti without sacrificing detail. However, e-athletes turn down details anyway if they want to improve the frame rate and opponent visibility.
