Anthony Modeste was celebrated by Cologne fans for years. He was considered a crowd favorite at the latest after he shot his team into the Europa League in 2017 with 25 goals this season. Then came the move to China, where he was not happy.

After his return in November 2018, Modeste initially had a difficult time in Cologne. With 20 goals in 32 Bundesliga games, the Frenchman was again instrumental in the success of Cologne last season. Instead of continuing to appear as a crowd favorite in the Rhine metropolis, he switched to Borussia Dortmund in the summer, where he was brought in as a short-term replacement for Sébastien Haller, who was suffering from cancer.

Modeste teases Selke about his shirt number

Now Modeste was teasing his successor in Cologne, Davie Selke, of all people. The striker comes on a free transfer from Hertha BSC and is expected to end Cologne’s goal drought. Coach Steffen Baumgart’s team has scored 21 goals in the first 15 games and is therefore more dangerous than six other teams, but only five goals were scored by center forwards. So far, Steffen Tigges (3), Sargis Adamyan (1) and Florian Dietz (1) are too safe.

Selke should now remedy this and has chosen a very special number for this: the 27. That doesn’t seem to suit Modeste, the former top scorer. He also wore the shirt number in Cologne and posted a family photo with his advisor. To do this, he wrote 27 in the lower right corner of the picture – he probably assumed that his former number would not be given out again so quickly.

“Anthony Modeste really is the biggest clown there is. Forces his move twice then cries about his act.”

Twitter user on Anthony Modeste’s behavior

The BVB star then shared several posts from fans in his story, all of whom wrote that there could only be one “true” number 27, namely him, Anthony Modeste.

Numerous Twitter users interpret this reaction as Modeste’s nightmare. For example, a user writes: “Anthony Modeste really is the biggest clown there is. Forces his move twice then cries about his act.”

He alludes to Modeste’s move to China in the summer of 2017 and his departure to BVB last summer.

Another user accuses the striker of “craving attention” on Instagram. After that she puts “DS27” the abbreviation for Davie Selke and his new jersey number.

It is unlikely that Selke and Cologne dialed the number to annoy Modeste. Rather, Selke also has a connection with the unusual shirt number.

Cologne’s new striker has scored most of his goals with that number on his back. He scored 27 of his 35 Bundesliga goals with it – there could be a kind of superstition behind the number choice. His wife Evelyn even had the shirt number tattooed on her bottom.

Selke last ran for Hertha BSC with the seven on his back, before that he also carried the nine – both without much success. Now he wants to start chasing goals again with his “new” old 27.
