The smart home accessories specialist Aqara has introduced the first presence sensor for HomeKit that can detect people using millimeter wave radar (millimeter wave radar). The hardware, which also works with Alexa, Google Home and other smart home systems – albeit to a limited extent – does not require a camera that is problematic in terms of data protection. At the same time, the system is significantly more accurate than sensors based on infrared technology.

The Presense Sensor FP2 is essentially a motion detector 2.0: It also detects small movements and can divide a room into up to 30 zones with a maximum of 320 “cells”. Up to five people can be distinguished, but the room size must not exceed 40 square meters. The room layout makes it possible to switch other HomeKit devices as soon as you enter a certain area of the room, for example the lamp on the armchair or the lighting above the desk as soon as you sit down.

Technically, the Presense Sensor FP2 is based on radar frequencies in the millimeter wave range. According to Aqara, “the smallest movements with maximum privacy” should be recognized. The manufacturer promises that there will be no misidentifications. The so-called multi-zone presence can be recognized via HomeKit, and a light sensor can also be addressed that would otherwise only be accessible via IFTTT – or Aqara’s own smart home technology, which can be used via an app. There is also fall detection to detect possible accidents by radar. However, this does not seem to be accessible via HomeKit at the moment.

Aqara charges just under 100 euros for the Presense Sensor FP2 for the launch (sales in Germany in preparation) – more than other motion detectors with simpler technology. When buying, you also have to consider whether existing cameras can continue to be used. However, the division of a room into up to 30 zones is a unique feature for HomeKit hardware and could enable control options on a new level.

What is annoying, however, is that the presence sensor requires a constant cable connection via USB-C in order to be supplied with power. However, it is not necessary to place the device centrally, for example on the ceiling, it can simply be placed anywhere on a table or on a shelf. Aqara requires the use of a hub in order to integrate it into HomeKit – you then have to buy it if you don’t already have other devices from the Chinese manufacturer.
