Guadalajara, Jal. Despite the fact that Jalisco counts 700 forest fires In the current dry season, which has damaged an area of 45,782 hectares, the food crop fields have not been affected, so, at least for this reason, a drop in production is not expected, assured the president of the Jalisco Agri-Food Council (CAJ), Roberto de Alba Macias.

However, he mentioned that the sector proposed to work together with state and federal authorities, in a forest fire warning and prevention program.

“That we can all do our bit to safeguard, above all, forest fires and that, based on all this monitoring, take the necessary measures so that they do not impact the investment of small producers,” he stressed.

severe drought

De Alba Macías reiterated, however, that the severe drought that affects 71 of the 125 municipalities in the state has affected the agro-producers who have had to replant their lands with the consequent increase in their production costs.

“Those with the greatest risk are the corn producers, which is the agricultural cycle that begins both in the central region of the state, where Zapopan is the first to start planting, and then the Valles, La Ciénega, and southern regions where in previous years the highest amounts have been registered in terms of losses by farmers”, he explained.

According to the president of the CAJ, as in past years, a drop in corn production is expected in the current agricultural cycle, due to the fact that “many lands have been abandoned due to lack of resources to produce and, on the other hand, On the other hand, people have abandoned their agrarian nuclei, their plots, and have rented other crops, especially agave”.

Only in the previous cycle, producers affiliated with the Jalisco Agri-Food Council reported that 2,500 hectares of crops were affected either by severe drought or atypical rainfall.
