In less than six months, eight offering boxes were broken into or even swept away. “A few months ago, we had a trunk that was moved and that we found in an emptied confessional. Since then, we have put chains”, says Pierre Vauprés, a volunteer. Only the chains do not stop the most determined. There are too few volunteers to watch the corners of the cathedral.
An act deemed immoral
The rector alerted the municipality and the gendarmes, but it was impossible for the armed men to patrol a place of worship. “We may be forced to reduce the opening of the church. (…) We cannot continue to live with the looting of trunks every week”, deplores Father Emmanuel Péteul, the rector of Bayeux Cathedral. The thefts were committed in broad daylight, without alerting the many visitors. Beyond the damage, it is the act itself that is shocking. With nearly a million visitors per year, the proceeds from the offerings make it possible in particular to finance electricity, the employment of an employee and the activities of the parish.
