TORONTO.- The shelf of Canada investigates a shooting occurred in front of the rap superstar’s residence Drakein Toronto, in which a man was seriously injured.
Police Inspector Paul Krawczyk said a security guard was taken to hospital with serious injuries after the shooting, which occurred before dawn on Tuesday at 2:09 am local time (06:09 GMT). The extensive property remained cordoned off.
The guard was standing outside the gates in front of the residence when the incident occurred, Krawczyk told reporters.
Police details
The shooting was captured on grainy security camera footage, but it has not been released to the public.
“I cannot confirm whether Drake was home at the time the incident occurred, but I can tell you that we are in contact with his team and they are cooperating,” the inspector detailed.
A suspect fled the scene in a vehicle, authorities said, but no description has been provided.
Police cordoned off much of the area. Several small orange marks could be seen on the edge of the road, believed to indicate the location of the bullet casings.
Drake, 37 years old, known for hits like God’s Plan y Hotline Blingwas the world’s highest-earning rapper last year.
In recent days, the Canadian has been involved in a lyrical war with Kendrick Lamar, in which the artists exchanged controversial lyrics with accusations of pedophilia, abuse and infidelity that have drawn public attention beyond the hip hop scene.
Fights are not something new in this musical genre, known for the boasting of its artists and for the strong battles between its great exponents.
There was no indication that the shooting had any connection to the battle between the rappers.
“Extraa Coincidencia”
“It’s a very strange coincidence that this happens in the middle of all this,” Cid Davoodf, a passer-by who lives near Drake’s residence, told AFP.
Police, who did not provide any description of the suspects or the car they were looking for, said the security guard remained in critical condition at the hospital at noon on Tuesday, May 7.
“I heard gunshots and a car driving very fast,” Richie Lai, a neighbor, told the CBC channel. “Five or 10 minutes later, or the sirens.”
In the morning, the international star’s residence was under heavy police surveillance. A wide security perimeter had been established to prevent onlookers from approaching the scene.
Drake’s residence, of more than 4,500 square meters, is located in the luxurious neighborhood of Bridle Path, north of the Canadian metropolis.
The police, who did not specify the number of shots fired, said they had video images that would help the investigation.
He also noted that the area will remain under reinforced police presence for some time.
