Canadian sentenced to 22 years in prison for sending letter containing ricin to the White House

Pascale Ferrier, 56, pleaded guilty to violating biological weapons bans in letters sent to Trump and police officers in Texas, where she was jailed in 2019 after refusing to leave a park area when it was closing.

Her defense attorney, Eugene Ohm, said Ferrier had no criminal record before that and was an “excessively intelligent” French immigrant who earned a master’s degree in engineering and raised two children as a single mother.

But prosecutors noted that in September 2020 Ferrier manufactured the potentially deadly poison derived from castor bean processing, then mailed it to Trump with a letter that referred to him as “The Tyrant Ugly Clown” and read in part: “If this doesn’t work, I’ll find a better recipe for another poison, or I could use my weapon when I can go. Enjoy! FREE REBEL SPIRIT.”

Ferrier’s letter, also telling Trump to “give up and withdraw your application for this election,” was intercepted at a mail sorting office in September 2020, before it could reach the White House.

Ferrier was arrested while trying to enter a border crossing in Buffalo, New York, carrying a gun, a knife and hundreds of ammunition, according to authorities. Investigators also found eight similar letters to Texas agents.

In a rambling speech, Ferrier told the judge that she considers herself a “peaceful and genuinely kind person” but gets angry over issues like injustice, abuses of power and “stupid rules.” She said she felt she had done little to support her values when she was raising her children, and she considered herself an “activist” rather than a “terrorist.”

“I want to find peaceful means to achieve my goals,” he said.
