The special prosecutor in charge of investigating Donald Trump and in particular his exact role in the assault on the Capitol has summoned former Republican Vice President Mike Pence to testify on Friday, announce our colleagues from CNN.

Already in November 2022, American justice had indicated that it wanted to hear the former close friend of Donald Trump in the course of the events of January 6, 2021.

That day, the former Republican president had publicly pressured Mike Pence not to certify the results of the election. Actions denounced as “irresponsible” by Mike Pencewhich had nevertheless refused to be heard during the committee of inquiry of the House of Representatives on the attack on the Capitol.

“Months of negotiations”

Potential presidential candidate for 2024, Mike Pence will have to testify this time. This subpoena was decided after “months of negotiations between federal prosecutors and Mike Pence’s legal team”, reported the ABC channel.

Donald Trump, who has already announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election, could try to prevent the testimony of his former vice president by wielding an executive prerogative to keep his communications confidential, as he has tried to do with other officials named to testify in the federal investigation, AFP reported.

The special prosecutor will have to decide whether or not to recommend the indictment of the Republican billionaire, and it will be up to the Minister of Justice to decide.
