The intragastric balloon is already a consolidated option in Brazil for the treatment of obesity. The device remains in the patient’s stomach for a period ranging from 6 months to a year, and insertion is done through endoscopy. The prosthesis is filled with saline solution and has the function of occupying the food space, leading the patient to adopt a more restricted diet.

However, the swallowable gastric balloon has emerged as a new alternative for patients with obesity. Unlike the intragastric version, endoscopy is not required for device insertion. In addition, there is no need to undergo anesthesia or surgery, just swallow a capsule. When it arrives in the stomach, doctors locate the capsule and inflate the balloon with a special liquid.

How the treatment works

“This balloon will reach 550 ml in volume and will give the patient a feeling of satiety. He has a full stomach, he is quenched and this inhibits his hunger. That is, with the balloon inside the stomach, the person starts to eat less and re-educate himself in his own way, with an extremely regulated diet”, explains gastrosurgeon and endoscopist Eduardo Grecco. He points out that there is a process for adapting the patient, which includes a liquid, creamy and pasty diet until he returns to eating normally.
