The Brandenburg CDU politician Saskia Ludwig has warned of hospital closures as a result of the planned hospital reform.

The CDU member of the state parliament said on Tuesday in the rbb citizens’ talk “We have to talk”, it is undisputed that the health system needs to be reformed, but the previous proposals are not very practical. “We in Brandenburg have to fight to ensure that our hospitals remain. We are a large area and of course we have to ensure that the care is guaranteed and that it is of good quality,” says Ludwig. The traffic light coalition in the federal government wants to bring the hospital reform into the parliamentary process at the end of May.

The health economist Reinhard Busse from the TU Berlin had previously advocated a better division and specialization of individual hospitals. “We need fewer hospital locations. But that won’t get worse, it’ll get better,” said Busse. He was a member of the expert commission that developed proposals for a comprehensive hospital reform on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Health. “It is very clear to me that the citizens assume that the nearest hospital should be nearby. But it would be more important that they are treated well,” said Busse. He also advocated treating significantly more outpatients – inside or outside the hospital. That would save staff. “Then you will have fewer filled beds than we have today.”

The deputy leader of the left-wing parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Gesine Lötzsch, pleaded for less pressure on profits in the health care system. It is intolerable that doctors “have to do things, perhaps against their ethical convictions, that bring in the most money. Therefore, hospitals must belong to the common good. They must be held responsible and they must not only be trimmed for profit.”
