A decision by the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) prohibits doctors from recommending the use of testosterone-based hormone therapies aimed at aesthetic goals. As of this Tuesday (11/4), professionals who prescribe the male hormone to patients to gain lean mass may be judged and punished by the Federal Council of Medicine.

“There has been a recent increase in this use and there is no minimum safe dose as some users claim. Therefore, we are prohibiting this practice”, says José Hiran Gallo, president of CFM.

The measure does not affect therapies with the use of male hormones for other functions, such as treating the body’s natural deficiencies, endocrine diseases or helping with gender transition processes.

unproven use

The prohibition is restricted only to the use of hormones as a way to improve performance in the gym. Practice that, for CFM, has no proof that it is effective and that can even lead to serious hospital admissions.

“We have seen an increase in the prescription of steroids for purposes that are not supported in recent months. They greatly increase the risk of adverse effects in patients”, says the rapporteur and federal counselor Annelise Menegusso.

“For physicians who act ethically, following guidelines and evidence, nothing will change. This measure seeks to avoid the action of professionals who act incorrectly”, maintains Annelise.

Impacts of use

The use of the male hormone as an anabolic steroid can generate a series of consequences for patients. The resolution is based on studies that showed an increase in cases of health problems among users, especially cardiac ones.

Unnecessary supplementation can lead to hypertension, cardiac arrhythmia and increased risk of heart attack. In addition, there are also studies that indicate that the use of these substances is related to the onset of liver diseases and aggressiveness disorders.

In men, the use of anabolic steroids can lead to dependence and infertility. Women, on the other hand, can, in addition to all the risks already mentioned, face problems of body modifications with accentuation of male characteristics.

The resolution was the result of eight months of discussion within the CFM. All medical entities consulted before the opinion were unanimous in agreeing with the total restrictions imposed.

Prohibition also for the future

In addition to preventing doctors from recommending the use of hormones for aesthetic purposes, the CFM’s decision also prevents apologies for their use. With this, events and lectures that promote this type of supplementation cannot be held, nor can courses be held in which the use of hormone therapy is linked to someone’s sports or physical performance.

The resolution also points out that experimental uses of hormone supplements are prohibited without prior authorization from competent bodies. “Although some professionals assess that there is an increase in performance and muscle mass gain by those who use this type of hormone therapy, the health risk makes its use an unjustified risk”, concludes the CFM opinion.
