Three weeks before the start of CHAN-2022, Cameroon is putting pressure on Algeria. He threatens to boycott the tournament, under the pretext of lack of security.

Algeria is preparing to host the 2022 African Nations Championship. Everything is ready to host the continental football event, from January 13 to February 4, 2023, particularly with regard to stadiums and infrastructure.

But three weeks before the start of the competition, Cameroon threatens to boycott it. The information was reported by the official website of “beIN Sports”, before being relayed by several Algerian media.

According to our colleague from Canal Algérie, Said Fellak, FECAFOOT is exerting pressure on Algeria in order to ensure the Cameroonian delegation great security during its stay in our country. A decision which would have been taken because of the tense relations between the two countries since the famous play-off match for the qualification for the World Cup. But also following the physical clash that took place between the president of FECAFOOT, Samuel Eto’o, and an Algerian YouTuber in Qatar.

Why Cameroon cannot boycott CHAN?

As of press time, the Algerian Football Federation has not received any correspondence from its Cameroonian counterpart regarding a possible boycott of CHAN. But what you need to know is that the instance of Samuel Eto’o will not be immune to heavy penalties in the event that it dares to ignore the continental competition which concerns the local African selections.

Indeed, article 58 of chapter 27 of the competition regulations notes that “any federation which withdraws after the draw and before the start of the matches is liable to a fine of five thousand (5,000) US dollars. She will also not be allowed to participate in the next edition of CHAN”.

Note that Cameroon is in group E. Along with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria.

Remember that Cameroon is not the first country to threaten to give up its participation in CHAN. About a week ago, Uganda announced its withdrawal for purely financial reasons, before reconsidering its decision.
