Charles III hands over his military functions to Prince William

MIDDLE WALLOP.- He king Charles III on Monday he handed over his title of colonel-in-chief of the British Army Air Corps to his eldest son, Prince Williaman honorary position that seemed to have been promised to his brother, Harry, during a visit to a military base.

The 75-year-old British monarch, who was diagnosed with cancer in February and is currently undergoing treatment, attended the event with the heir to the throne, attended by soldiers and their families, at Middle Wallop airfield, Hampshire, in the southern England.

Charles III became the first colonel-in-chief of the British Army Air Corps 32 years ago and announced in 2023 that he wanted to pass this title on to his heir.

I wish to express to you my great joy at being with you, even if only briefly, a joy also accompanied by great sadness after 32 years of being with you and admiring your numerous successes, declared the king.

Decendents

His little son, Harry, 39, at odds with the royal family and self-exiled in the United States, served in this British Army regiment during a mission in Afghanistan in 2012, in which he was commander of an Apache helicopter.

Because of this, he was expected to inherit this honorary title after his father, but the Duke of Sussex stepped down from his royal duties in 2020 when he left the United Kingdom with his wife Meghan.

During his stay in London last Wednesday to attend a ceremony to mark the tenth anniversary of the Invictus Games, an international competition for wounded soldiers in which he is closely involved, the prince did not meet his father, which the Palace of Buckingham justified the monarch’s very busy schedule.

After three months without public commitments, but without ceasing to exercise certain official functions, the sovereign resumed some of his activities at the beginning of May.

Prince William, 41, received information on Monday about his new duties and had to leave the air base aboard an Apache helicopter.

The heir to the throne spent more than seven years in the British Army, including three as a rescue helicopter pilot at the Royal Air Force base on the island of Anglesey, Wales, until 2013.

“I hope that you will do very well in the future with the Prince of Wales as your new colonel-in-chief,” Charles III told the soldiers in his speech. “The good thing is that he is a very good pilot. That is encouraging,” the sovereign added.
