Paris.
With the pandemic, the number of travelers on long-distance trains also fell. The Eurostar is now showing a reversal trend.

More travelers are traveling on the Eurostar trains between France and Great Britain again after traffic collapsed during the Corona crisis.

8.3 million travelers used the express train last year, like the Channel Tunnel operator Getlink informed. Before the 2019 pandemic, there were still a good eleven million travelers. The rail transport of trucks through the tunnel in 2022 increased by six percent compared to the previous year to 1.45 million vehicles.

With a market share of 42.2 percent, the tunnel is the market leader for truck transport between France and Great Britain, as well as for car transport. 2.1 million passenger cars were transported through the tunnel with the shuttle trains, which corresponds to a market share of 62.8 percent.

Despite difficult market conditions, new transports could also have been won for the tunnel in the area of classic freight trains, Getlink said. For about a year, new Toyota cars manufactured in Great Britain have been transported by rail to distribution centers in northern France. (dpa)
