UA new study published by JAMA Internal Medicine indicates that ChatGPT’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) is better at responding to patient emails than real doctors. A panel of healthcare professionals concluded that, 79% of the time, responses generated by this AI tool were of better quality.

“There is one area in public health where there is a greater need than ever before and that is people seeking medical advice. Physician inboxes are full after this transition to virtual care due to Covid-19”can be read in the study led by John W Ayers, one of those responsible for the area of innovation at the University of San Diego in California, USA.

In addition to providing more complete answers to patients’ questions and concerns, the emails generated by ChatGPT were also found to be more empathetic than those written by real doctors.

Despite the conclusive results, those responsible for the study are not sure that AI is at the right point to replace doctors in responding to emails.

“For some patients, it can save their lives. But we also know that there is a greater chance of survival if there is greater compliance with medical advice, such as lowering salt intake or taking medication. In this scenario, messaging can help ensure compliance with this advice.”says the study.
