In the Dornbirn chess club, young chess players played against older chess players and measured their skills.

Dornbirn “The idea of the generational chess game came to national player and youth coach Julia Novkovic six years ago. How would it be if young and older players competed against each other in what is probably the most famous brain teaser?” Erich Peterlunger, state senior chess officer, explained the idea of the special competition. In December, this chess game was held successfully for the third time at the Dornbirner Chess Club. The young players prevailed in the first tournament and were ultimately overall winners of the two tournaments.

“We held the first three rounds back in October. The youngsters won there,” said Peterlunger. He put together a team of nine seniors for the chess game. Julia Novkovic, trainer of the youth group at the Dornbirn chess club, provided the nine children and young people. In the last three rounds, the competition was finally decided shortly before Christmas. “We older chess players left no stone unturned in the second half of the tournament to avoid defeat. But we couldn’t shake the boys’ overall victory,” he explained. The boys’ team was made up of players between the ages of 10 and 18. “The team of old chess players consisted of players who are already over 60 years old,” says Peterlunger about the composition of the two groups.

Trainer Julia Novkovic put this tournament on its feet together with state senior citizen officer Erich Peterlunger. “Our idea was that we would let the younger ones compete against the older ones in this sport. In which sport can you do that?” said Peterlunger, amused. Julia Novkovic wanted the younger ones to compete against experienced players. “You can learn from each other at any age. From the point of view of the playing style, there are hardly any differences to the younger ones. However, I’ve noticed that the young girls and boys go into the game much more aggressively. That was impressive,” says Peterlunger. The comparative competition in the Dornbirn clubhouse was a challenge for both groups, requiring concentration and stamina. At the subsequent celebration, of course, one or the other game was talked about. Bvs
