A 10-year-old boy who was hit by a stray bullet died Sunday in the town of Lauderhill, Broward County, Florida, the family confirmed.

The minor lost his life after being shot in the neck inside his own home on Tuesday of last week. The family of the little boy, identified as Mike Brenly Saint Jean, confirmed his death this Tuesday in statements to the news channel NBC6.

Around 9:30 pm on November 14, Lauderhill Police responded to a call at an apartment complex on Northwest 19th Street about a juvenile bleeding from the neck. When they arrived the boy was unconscious, and when they checked him they discovered that a bullet had passed through his neck.

The authorities believe that the shot came from an adjacent apartmentin which the bullet passed through the wall and the neck of the little boy, who remained in critical condition for several days until he died on Sunday.

The Saint Jean family said Mike was sitting in the living room of the apartment, waiting for his older brother to review his homework when this happened.

“Mike didn’t live long, and we lost him,” said the father, Paul Gregory Saint Jean, in an interview with the aforementioned media outlet.

The family, from Haiti, explains that they are experiencing a “really hard” and “painful” situation, since the child had never been sick and was very active in the community, in the school where he was in fourth grade, and as an altar boy at St. Helena Catholic Church in Lauderdale Lakes.

Both school staff and their colleagues say they are devastated by the loss, and opened an account on the platform GoFundMe to raise funds for the funeral.

The Saint Jean family seeks justice for Mike, although authorities indicated that the motive for the shooting is still unknown and they have not filed charges against anyone so far.
