  • Tesla is going to fix the vehicles with a software update that can be delivered wirelessly.

China ordered Tesla this Friday, May 12, to retire and repair 1.1 million vehicles. The cause: problems with the acceleration and braking system in some models made in China and others imported from the United States.

The Chinese market regulator said the decision was made after an investigation was carried out into a reported defect found in different imported Model S, Model X and Model 3 models, as well as Model 3 and Model Y. manufactured in China between January 12, 2019 and April 24, 2023.

The problem, which has already become a headache for Elon Musk’s strategy in China, it involves the regenerative braking system, which produces electricity with the movement of the car when the driver takes a foot off the accelerator.

According to the State Administration for Market Regulation, the defect could lead to higher risks of collisions.

Tesla responded immediately, saying it will fix the vehicles with a software update that can be delivered wirelessly.

Trouble for Tesla in China

The recall of millions of Tesla now is the second in a few months in China.

In March, Tesla had to recall 2,649 vehicles made between October 2015 and August 2020 after a Tesla regulator said the hoods of some imported Model S were at risk of opening when the vehicle was running.

China is not a minor market for Tesla: revenue in that country grew to 18.2 billion in 2022. In 2021, it had raised 13.8 billion dollars.

The new retreat will begin on May 29. Tesla will notify owners by mail or text message.

Tesla has also had problems with regulators in the United States.

Last February, it recalled more than 362,000 cars that have the driver assistance system. Full Self Driving.

According to the US regulator, the system, which can steer, accelerate, brake and change lanes on its own, allowed cars to travel beyond the legal speed limit and through intersections without braking.
