The Tunisian desert served as the setting for the mythical space opera saga “Star Wars” imagined by George Lucas. The sets installed by the film crews are still there, and attract many fans.

At the first light of day, a strange ghost town appears in the middle of the Tunisian desert. Its houses are those of Mos Espa, the town on the planet Tatooine where the hero of the Star Wars saga, Luke Skywalker, grew up. This is where George Lucas shot some scenes from the movies. Fans from all over the world flock there, like Polish tourists who have traveled more than 5,000 km in their old Mercedes to take photos.

A titanic job

The sets are also used by Tunisian vendors and guides. The president of the local fanclub watches over them in his spare time. A few kilometers away, the troglodyte houses of Matmata also served as a setting. The hotel manager remembers filming in 1976 and 2000: “They took a month and a half to prepare everything for an hour of filming.“Star Wars is one of the most famous licenses, with nine films and billions of euros in revenue.
