Summery recyclable styles for women, men and children are the focus of the first Circular Collection, which the international fashion brand bonprix is presenting today. The design is geared towards recyclability and durability and is based on the circular design criteria of the Berlin company circular.fashion. In addition to the use of more sustainable materials, the development process now also focuses on the end of a product’s life cycle and recycling. A second Circular Collection is already being developed for autumn 2023. From June, bonprix will also be supporting the social enterprise Plastic Bank in bringing plastic waste back into the material cycle.

bonprix launches the first Circular Collection and thus achieves an important milestone in its Corporate Responsibility (CR) strategy ” positive choice“. Part of this strategy is, for example, the consistent increase in the proportion of more sustainable and correspondingly certified materials in the collections. The fashion company is also promoting recyclability. Since 2021, bonprix has been offering recyclable products that are made with the Cradle to Cradle Certified® are certified in silver because they contain only biodegradable materials. With the Circular Collection, the fashion brand is now expanding its range of recyclable items.

“Achieving the circularity of consumer goods is a central economic, social and political task – and challenges us especially in the textile industry. With a view to design and production, a new approach and cooperation are necessary. When developing the first Circular Collection, we have many We can gain experience that will have a major impact on how we want to create fashion in the future,” explains Stefanie Sumfleth, Head of Corporate Responsibility & Technical Product at bonprix.

Establishment of recyclable design criteria with circular.fashion

In order to make a product recyclable, its entire life cycle must be considered and the further use of the raw materials must be considered. This requires a different approach throughout the design and production process. bonprix asked the Berlin company for support for this challenge circular.fashion wanted, which is already cooperating with other well-known fashion companies worldwide.

An interdisciplinary bonprix team, together with circular.fashion, has expanded the existing processes and principles with so-called circular design criteria. These are based on three pillars: a design with materials from healthy, renewable and/or recycled raw materials, recyclability and durability.

Ina Budde, co-founder and managing director of circular.fashion, comments: “We are pleased that with bonprix we have been able to support another important player and pioneer in the fashion industry in establishing criteria and processes to design and promote more circular fashion We are working towards a common goal: a closed circular economy in the future.”

The collection

The pilot collection includes styles for women, men and children. It is designed for timeless and durable, yet fashionable items that bonprix customers should enjoy for a long time. A highlight and central piece of the collection is the jumpsuit in two colors (orange and black), which is casual and feminine at the same time.

The items in the collection are made from 100 percent organic cotton or a mixture with a maximum of 5 percent elastane so that they can be recycled. There are no large prints, buttons on the jeans can be unscrewed and rivets have been replaced by embroidered applications. Processing features such as fabrics with a higher grammage and reinforced seams result in an increased durability of the items.

The second Circular Collection is already in production for autumn of this year. Then the focus will be on materials that are warm, but also durable and robust – such as corduroy, which is converted into modern, timeless styles. For the first time, recyclable accessories will also find their place in this collection.

Cooperation with Plastic Bank

With the first Circular Collection, bonprix is also collaborating with Plastic Bank known. The social enterprise from Canada is committed to ensuring that less plastic pollutes the oceans. To this end, the institution forms communities of so-called ocean stewards, who collect plastic waste on the beaches before it is washed into the sea. The plastic obtained is recycled and reused in products and packaging. Depending on the amount collected, the Ocean Stewards receive a payment that helps to secure their livelihood.

bonprix supports Plastic Bank with the equivalent of 2.2 million collected plastic bottles. For bonprix customers, the cooperation can be experienced with the launch of the swimwear campaign made of recycled polyamide in June.

Carolin Klar, the new managing director and responsible for the areas of purchasing, procurement and corporate responsibility at bonprix, comments: “Clothing as a ‘value material’ in the literal sense of course being returned to the cycle is a current topic in the industry and an important component of our bonprix Sustainability strategy ‘positive choice’. However, the majority of our customers do not yet combine recyclability and fashion. With our commitment, we are making an important contribution to more sustainability in the textile industry and will continue to promote circularity with high priority and raise awareness of it. Because we are convinced: in recyclability lies the opportunity for a more sustainable future of fashion.”
