The result in Bremen gives the SPD new impetus – but it is mainly thanks to the top candidate Andreas Bovenschulte.

The Bremen result is also a blessing for Olaf Scholz and his SPD, albeit a small one. Although the federal party places the chancellor in the “traffic light”, this is of little use to the oldest party in Germany. The poll numbers have been poor for a long time. And that’s why it’s at least a little encouraging when the SPD is in first place in small Bremen.

Nevertheless, the victory is first and foremost thanks to Andreas Bovenschulte, the 57-year-old lawyer is considered to be close to the people and objective. Such a person is certainly not only appreciated in the north.

His competitor Frank Imhoff from the CDU can’t hold a candle to his appearance, the Christian Democrat remained too inconspicuous for that. Party leader Friedrich Merz will be annoyed.

It was somehow foreseeable that the Greens in Bremen would lose their feathers. The poorly sold and thwarted by many private heating policy has dealt Habeck and Co. quite a blow. But even in Bremen itself, the green top candidate Maike Schaefer caused some irritation with her overly brash policy for cyclists. And every shrewd politician should know that the “roll button” for drivers cannot be abolished with impunity.

Andreas Bovenschulte has always stood above these things and can now choose his future coalition. Red-green-red is possible, but other options are also possible.

As expected, the “Citizens in Anger”, which only operates in Bremen, achieved a good result. They were successful because the AfD people in the Hanseatic city were too stupid to have their own list. The “citizens in anger” are a different category than the AfD, so far not right-wing radicals. They feed on the conservative “Alliance Germany”. A collection movement that is now enjoying its first success.
